Competitions
The 2023 Mid-South Horn Workshop will offer the following competitions:
Solo Competitions (High School & University-level)
Horn Ensemble Competition (University-level)
Mixed Ensemble Competition (University-level)
In addition to workshop registration, all competitions will require an additional fee of $10 per person. Non-horn players who are part of the mixed ensemble category should choose the “non-horn player” category during registration to receive a discounted price.

Solo Competition: High School
Eligibility
Students entering this competition must be currently enrolled in high school (grades 9–12) or in a home-schooling program.
Rules
- Students must perform from legally acquired music.
- The winner of this competition will be invited to play in a masterclass with a Mid-South Guest Artist on Saturday, April 1.
- There is only one round for the high school competition.
- An accompanist will be provided.
- The winner will be allowed to perform on the final performance of the conference on Sunday, April 2nd.

Solo Competition: Collegiate
Eligibility
Students entering this competition must be enrolled full-time at a college or university as either an undergraduate or graduate student.
Rules
- The preliminary round will be performed unaccompanied.
- For the final round, piano accompaniment will be provided by the University of Arkansas
- Students must perform from legally acquired music.
- The winner of this competition will be invited to play in a master class with a Mid-South Guest Artist on Saturday, April 1st.
- The winner may be asked to perform on the final performance of the workshop on Sunday, April 2nd.

Ensemble Competition: Horn Ensemble
Eligibility
All students in the quartet must be registered as either undergraduate or graduate students at a college or university.
Rules
- The ensemble can consist of anywhere between 2-6 performers (no piano allowed).
- Each ensemble must supply the judges with two photocopied scores of each piece being performed.
- The winner of this competition will be invited to play in a master class with a Mid-South Guest Artist on Saturday, April 1st.
- The winner may be asked to perform on the final performance of the workshop on Sunday, April 2nd.
Repertoire
Each ensemble should prepare 10-15 minutes of music.
Ensemble Competition: Mixed Ensemble
Eligibility
All students within the mixed ensemble must be registered as either an undergraduate or graduate student at a college or university.
Rules
- Each ensemble must supply the judges with two photocopied scores of each piece performed.
- The maximum number of ensemble performers is six (including piano).
- Each ensemble must have at least one horn player.
- The winner of this competition will be invited to play in a master class with a Mid-South Guest Artist on Saturday, April 1st.
- The winner may be asked to perform on the final performance of the workshop on Sunday, April 2nd.
Repertoire
Each ensemble should prepare 10-15 minutes of music. The repertoire performed should prominently feature the horn(s) within the ensemble.
