Meet the Faculty

Lia Uribe

Professor of Bassoon

Biography

Lia Uribe is the bassoon professor at the University of Arkansas, principal bassoonist of SoNAAPO, and member of the Lyrique Quintette. As a chamber musician, orchestral player and artist-teacher, she has participated in concerts and festivals in Argentina, Canada, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Finland, Ecuador, Germany, Greece, Japan, Peru, England, Spain, Colombia, many stages in the USA, and most recently, virtual master classes in Panama, Guatemala and Bolivia.

Dr. Uribe’s students have been accepted in graduate programs at the University of Kansas, University of Georgia, University of Iowa, University of North Carolina School of the Arts, and the UMKC Conservatory. She loves the diversity of her surroundings and likes to create bridges with all music expressions and musicians any way she can. Originally from Colombia, Lia Uribe holds degrees in bassoon performance from Universidad Nacional de Colombia, University of Arkansas, and University of Kansas.

Nophachai Cholthitchanta

Professor of Clarinet

Biography

Dr. Cholthitchanta joined the University of Arkansas in fall 2001. Previously, he taught at Graceland University and faculty at Continuing Education, The University of Missouri-Kansas City. Formerly, Nophachai was the principal clarinetist of the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra, L’Orchestre Mondial Des Jeunesses Musicales, Asian Youth Orchestra, Asean Youth Orchestra and was a member of Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra, Kansas City Chamber Orchestra, New Ear Ensemble etc. He has performed at music festivals as a soloist, chamber music musician and orchestral member in the major concert halls in more than twelve countries. Nophachai has appeared at International Clarinet Association (ICA)-ClarinetFest, International Double Reed Society Convention, National Flute Association Convention and The College Music Society National Conference. In addition to modern clarinet, Nophachai is also a researcher and an avid collector of historical clarinets. He owns both originals and reproductions of 18th – 19th c. clarinets. His research paper entitled “Stubbin’s S-K Mechanism” was published in a companion volume to the Catalogue of the Sir Nicholas Shackleton Collection by Edinburgh University Collection of Historic Musical Instruments. Nophachai presented both research papers and lecture recital at American Musical Instrument Society Meetings, The Galpin Society Conferences.

Ronda Mains

Professor of Flute

Biography

Ronda Mains is professor of flute/music education and chair of the Department of Music. She is principal flutist of the North Arkansas Symphony and performer with the Lyrique Quintette, Cholthichanta/Mains Duo and Zephyr Trio. Dr. Mains has appeared as a soloist with the North Arkansas Symphony, University of Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and Wind Symphony, Oregon Winds, Boise Summer Symphony, the Treasure Valley Wind Ensemble, and the Boise State University Symphony and Wind Ensemble. She has performed solo and chamber music nationally and abroad; in 1998, she performed at the National Flute Convention in Phoenix, Arizona. An advocate of contemporary music, Dr. Mains has been actively involved in commissioning and recording new works with her chamber groups. She can be heard with Novaria on a CD featuring new music for flute and guitar and with the Lyrique Quintette on a CD entitled Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue. As a member of the quintet, she has been involved in editing transcriptions for quintets. Dr. Mains is the author of several articles.

Catalina Ortega

Instructor of Flute

Biography

A native of Colombia, Catalina Ortega is a flute instructor at the University of Arkansas and the University of Arkansas Community Music School. She plays with the Arkansas Philharmonic Orchestra, Ozark Family Opera Company and Fayetteville Opera. In addition to teaching, Ms. Ortega has performed in some of the major auditoriums in Colombia as a soloist and touring with chamber music ensembles. She has served Flute/ Piccolo player for the North Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and Flute player of the Medellin Philharmonic Orchestra (Colombia) for several years. She has appeared as a soloist with the University of Arkansas Campus Band. The University of Arkansas Provost’s office and the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards recognized Ms. Ortega during the 2017 Annual State and National Awards as an Outstanding Mentor. She holds a Master Degree in Music Performance and a Certificate in Advanced Instrumental Performance in Flute from the University of Arkansas, as well as a B.A in Flute Music Performance from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Colombia. She is also a member of the Society of Pi Kappa Lambda by the Epsilon Sigma Chapter.

Katelyn J. J. Halbert

Visiting Assistant Professor of Horn

Biography

Hornist Katey J. Halbert’s vibrant personality and passion for music inspire both as a teacher and performer. Her career over the last decade has been highlighted by numerous unique and engaging musical experiences. As a performer she has been a featured soloist at numerous festivals and conferences, many of whom have focused on representation of women in music such as the International Women’s Brass Conference and the Women Composer’s Festival at Hartford. As a chamber musician, she has been a member of the nonprofit organization, the Wild Prairie Winds, for the last four years working towards goals such as prairie conservation awareness and accessible music education. Her love for music continues year round as she spends her summers teaching at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, Michigan performing with Blue Lake’s faculty wind and brass quintets as well as the Festival Chamber Orchestra. Now as a resident of Northwest Arkansas she is the Visiting Assistant Professor of Horn at the University of Arkansas and the horn player of both the Lyrique Quintette and Arkansas Brassworks.

Theresa Delaplain

Professor of Oboe

Biography

Theresa Delaplain has had a notable career as an oboist and pedagogue. She performs regularly as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral musician. As an orchestral musician, Dr. Delaplain is Principal Oboist of the Fort Smith Symphony, the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas, and the Arkansas Philharmonic, and she has also played with the Tulsa Symphony, the Oklahoma City Symphony, the Springfield (OH) Symphony, and the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra. Dr. Delaplain has appeared at 10 International Double Reed Society conventions, and was a guest recitalist at the Southwest Contemporary Music Festival, in addition to performing at the College Music Society National and Regional Conventions and the National Flute Society Convention. Dr. Delaplain teaches oboe and music theory at the University of Arkansas. She has won several grants for projects and concerts at the University of Arkansas, and has regularly brought in guest artists to work with the studio. She has been active as an adjudicator and clinician, including appearances at the Mid-South Double Reed Society Convention, Valdosta State University Double Reed Day, East Carolina Oboe Day, and the Arkansas All-State Music Convention.

Eric Troiano

Teaching Assistant Professor of Saxophone

Biography

Eric Troiano is the Instructor of Saxophone at the University of Arkansas. He maintains an active teaching and performing career as a soloist and chamber musician. He has been a guest artist at numerous places including Ithaca College, Central Michigan University, Oakland University, Southwestern Oklahoma State University, Interlochen Center for the Arts, and many other high schools around Arkansas, Michigan, and New York. As a chamber musician, he performs regularly with the Viridian Saxophone Quartet across the country. He has won prizes at the Coleman, Fischoff, MTNA, and NASA Chamber Music Competitions. An advocate for new music, Dr. Troiano has premiered and commissioned many new pieces for the saxophone and saxophone quartet, including pieces by composers Alexis Bacon, Bill Cunliffe, Andrew Francis, Peter Golub, Justin Rito, Curtis Smith, Joel Thompson, among others. Eric has his MM and DMA degrees from Michigan State University, where he studied with Joseph Lulloff, and undergraduate degrees in Saxophone Performance and Music Education from Ithaca College, where he studied with Steven Mauk.
