2025 Arkansas Double Reed Rally

Arkansas Double Reed Rally is a fun and unique
workshop learning experience for young musicians!

Students work with professionals to hone their skills and learn about their instruments.
The day will include classes based on repertoire, sight-reading skills (based on level),
reedmaking, double reed ensemble, and workshops for those who are auditioning for All-State.

Open to oboists and bassoonists in grades 7 – 12

Billingsley Music Building, U of A Campus, Fayetteville

Free parking is available at the Stadium Drive Parking Garage (SDPG on the campus map below). Park on any level. Take elevator to 4th floor. Exit transfer station onto Garland Ave. Walk straight ahead to the Music Building.

Refunds are not available for this event. However, substitutions are welcome.

Reed-Making

Reed-making is a favorite activity, and integral to our students’ growth as double reed musicians.
All needed tools and supplies will be available to all students.
Students who own some or all of the following supplies are encouraged to bring them to the workshop.

Meet the Clinicians

Dr. Theresa Delaplain

Professor of Oboe

Biography

Theresa Delaplain is an esteemed oboist and pedagogue.  She has performed as soloist with the Fort Smith Symphony, the North Arkansas Symphony, the Arkansas Philharmonic, the Thai National Orchestra, The Tulsa Youth Symphony, and the University of Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, and Chamber Orchestra. Dr. Delaplain is an avid chamber musician, and she is oboist with the Lyrique Quintette. Dr. Delaplain plays on Lorée oboes and is a Lorée Artist, and currently serves as Principal Oboist for the Fort Smith Symphony and the Arkansas Philharmonic. 

She has also written a popular oboe reed-making book, My Kingdom for a Reed!, and is the co-host of Something to Crow About!, a YouTube channel devoted to oboe reed-making.

Dr. Delaplain’s album of music for oboe and piano, Souvenirs (MSR Classics), was described in Fanfare as “…a fascinating mix of repertoire, performed to the highest of standards. This is a fabulously thought-out excursion into the oboe repertoire, beautifully recorded.” In The Double Reed, the album was reviewed as “a masterful recording, encompassing a wide range of musical cultures.”

Dr. Delaplain teaches oboe and music theory at the University of Arkansas. Her formal education included attending Macalester College for two years, where she studied with Rachel Brudnoy and Richard Killmer; earning a Bachelor of Music in Oboe Performance degree from the University of Michigan, where she studied with Arno Mariotti; earning a Master of Music in Oboe Performance from Bowling Green State University, where she studied with John Bentley; and earning a Doctor of Musical Arts in Oboe Performance from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, where she studied with Sara Bloom and had master classes with Robert Bloom.

Dr. Melanie Ferrabone

Biography
Panamanian Bassoonist
Dr. Melanie Ferrabone, a distinguished Panamanian bassoonist, has built a multifaceted international career as a teacher, soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral performer. Her work has profoundly influenced generations of musicians worldwide.
Currently, Dr. Ferrabone serves as bassoon faculty at the University of Arkansas. Before this, she was an adjunct professor at Florida International University. During the summer, she contributes as the Artistic Operations and Program Coordinator for the Saint Malo Festival in Panama, where she also performed as a soloist with the festival’s wind ensemble in 2024.
An active performer in Arkansas and Florida, Dr. Ferrabone has been part of prestigious ensembles such as the Arkansas Symphony, Palm Beach Symphony, Florida Grand Opera, and Gulfshore Opera, among others. She has also been a recording bassoonist for Miami Art House and L Music Miami.
Her active participation in prestigious events includes the 2024 College Music Society Conference, the 2023 Meg Quigley Bassoon Competition and Symposium in Arizona, and the 2023 Festival de Dobles Cañas de Centroamérica in Guatemala.
Twice featured in Score Magazine, Dr. Ferrabone was recognized as a distinguished female musician in Florida, highlighting her innovative vision for today’s music career.
Dr. Ferrabone’s musical journey began in Panama, studying under Daniel Agudo at the National Conservatory. She later moved to the United States, earning her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Southern Mississippi under Dr. Kimberly Woolly and both her Master and Doctoral degrees at the University of Miami under Professor Gabriel Beavers.
